29 Rooms D.C: Interview with Trap Bob - Find humor in your struggle

So what is it?

29Rooms of art, activism, style and technology.

29Rooms of multi-sensory installations, performances, and workshops.

29Rooms of visionaries and brands collaborating under one roof, tapping into the conversations of today and our hopes for tomorrow.

I had the pleasure of going up to D.C to expand my reality, experience the playful and mystical exhibits, and connect with visual artist and collaborator Tenbeete Solomon AKA Trap Bob.

As a part of the new Art Park, she was invited to transform a geometric playground into a canvas of creativity; and of course rep her city Washington D.C.

Here is our conversation:

Me: You are known for your use of colors to convey the humor and struggles of every day life. What 2 colors describe you?

Trap: Pink, blue and if I had to pick a third, yellow.

Me: Pink is my signature color, so I’m with you on that one.

Me: Some would say that using humor as a coping mechanism is toxic behavior. What do you say to that?

Trap: The opposite, humor is healthy and puts you in a positive place. I don’t like being upset; I’m Ethiopian and we have to leave a situation happy. You shouldn’t be too serious; be in a place where you can laugh.

Me: You’ve done Broccoli City Music Festival here in D.C. and I saw that you recently assisted on animation for Missy Elliott’s new video Drip Demeanor, congratulations!

Trap: Yes, thank you. (From her Instagram post, she called this a major life moment).

Me: Do you have any interest in being involved with the Something in the Water Festival in Virginia Beach? You could use Missy as your connect to Pharrell.

Trap: Definitely, I would love to! Funny thing is, every year for 10 years I would visit Virginia Beach, and last year was the first time I hadn’t done that.

Me: Switching subjects, what social issues are you most passionate about?

Trap: Equality of everyone especially minority and women. Getting involved in activism and community issues has brought me into politics. **She has also worked with the Women’s March and is creative director of GIRLAAA**

Me: I appreciate you taking the time to speak with me, thank you.

** At the end of the interview Missy Elliott started playing over the speaker, hopefully a sign of things to come**

29Rooms D.C is sold out, but you can see more of the experience on their Facebook page or get tickets at their events in New York and Los Angeles.
